Synagogue Seats – Choosing the right seating system for your synagogue

The Synagogue is where your congregation spends most of their common time, during the week and especially on Saturdays and holidays. Therefore, in addition to the synagogue furniture design and quality, the ergonomic design of the seating systems, tables, and storage cells is of great importance.

Following are some key points to guide you through in choosing the right seats for your synagogue.

Synagogue seating systems design

The seating system in the synagogue should conform to the character and preferences of the congregation.

The storage system

In some synagogues, the chosen seating system includes a storage cell for the prayer shawl and Tefillin. Other synagogues prefer a seat with a simple stand against it, enough for an open reading book.

Synagogue Seat Layout

The seating system planning is highly important for the utilization and maximizing of the synagogue space.

Many communities seek to populate the synagogue with the maximum possible number of people in the given space. On the other hand, there are wealthy communities that seek to allow personal space for each person and thereby prevent overcrowding.

To upholster, or not to upholster?

Yeshivas and other educational institutions tend to choose non-upholstered seating systems – made of wood only. Seating systems of that kind are easier to maintain and clean, are airier, and sometimes more space saving.

For clients who do choose to upholster the synagogue seating system, we use a very durable textile type which is easy to clean, and whether necessary, also a fire-resistant upholstery.

Synagogue seating systems in Israel compared the Diaspora

There is a difference between typical sitting systems of synagogues in Israel and those used in the United States. In Israel, it is customary to install a permanent chair while in the United States a seat that lifts independently is usually installed.
